Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH)

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries.

Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH uniquely combines research, education and services on a local, national and international level. We aim to improve the health and well-being of people through a better understanding of disease and health systems and by acting on this knowledge.

Our translational approach, from innovation and validation to application, enables us to bring novel diagnostics, drugs and vaccines directly to people, communities, policy and decision makers. Throughout, we pursue a spirit of partnership and strive for sustainable impact in over 100 countries.

More than 900 employees and students work at Swiss TPH, focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions. Our expertise spans from the bench to the field, from basic to operational, from molecular to spatial, and from genes to health systems.

Swiss TPH provides a unique learning experience in a broad range of topics, including international health, epidemiology, public health, infection biology, clinical practice, insurance medicine and management. The institute offers undergraduate and master's programmes as well as doctoral and PhD programmes in collaboration with the University of Basel. At the postgraduate level, a range of professional certificate (CAS), diploma (DAS) and master's (MAS) programmes can be completed at Swiss TPH.

Education and training has been a cornerstone of Swiss TPH since its foundation in 1943. Our unique combination of research, services and education shapes the curricula and provides participants with a multidisciplinary view of the complex interactions between health, disease and health systems. Novel scientific contributions are introduced and applied directly in the classroom or through blended learning methods.

Mutual learning is a core principle of Swiss TPH. The professional postgraduate programmes are particularly vibrant platforms for exchange due to the diversity of participants and their professional backgrounds. Swiss TPH particpates in joint programmes with global organisations and in national and international educational networks such as the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+) and tropEd, the global network for education in international health.

Swiss TPH is a leading institution in the field of global health. Its mandate is to contribute to improving the health of populations internationally, nationally and locally through excellence in research, services and teaching and training. It offers a range of teaching programmes from BSc to PhD level and in the field of postgraduate professional continuous education. It is an associated institute of the University of Basel
